The good: Excellent specs for its size; good battery life; compact, lightweight.

The bad: No dedicated graphics; plastic body looks and feels cheap; keyboard and touch pad are substandard.

The bottom line: Acer's high-end and extremely portable 11.6-inch TimelineX 1830T-68U118 offers a great combination of processor power and features that match what you'd find on a full-size laptop.

The Aspire One line of Netbooks has long been a bright spot in Acer's laptop lineup, thanks to the company's firm commitment to rock-bottom prices and decent, if unexciting, design and construction. The latest version, called the Acer Aspire One D260-23797 (one of several fixed configurations of the D260, each with slightly different components), scores points for being small, thin, and light, even for a 10-inch Netbook, despite having a decent-size keyboard and touch pad.

Since the first Timeline laptops hit in the first half of 2009, many other PC makers have been able to match thin designs with long battery life and decent performance, making the Timeline at least somewhat less distinctive.

When we looked at Acer's first Ferrari-themed ultra portable, the Ferrari 1000, we liked its car-themed style and strong performance, but were disappointed by its mediocre battery life. We opened the box of its successor, the Ferrari 1100, with some anticipation--this is, after all, a well-designed, full-featured ultra portable laptop that ought to impress. But alas: Despite its strong components, the Ferrari 1100 posted mixed performance scores and less-than-stellar battery life. Though we're thrilled that Acer has managed to squeeze a DVD burner into the Ferrari's compact and solidly constructed case, we're not convinced that anyone but the most fanatical sports-car enthusiasts will be thrilled to spend $1,800 on the Ferrari 1100.

The $2599 Acer Aspire 8920 is a whole lotta laptop, crammed with so many features that we kept checking for a kitchen sink. It has a humongous screen, a Blu-ray drive, six speakers, a giant hard drive, a top-flight processor, and a gadget-laden keyboard. You won't skip the light fandango while carrying this 9-pound monstrosity, but you will get awesome performance (and anemic battery life). In other words, it's a powerful desktop replacement laptop that will take up most of your desktop.
