Toshiba Satellite E205-S1980 Review

The good: Updated version of the Satellite E205 includes Nvidia Optimus graphics; WiMax-ready; slim design; Intel Wireless Display.

The bad: Weak speakers; poor battery life; expensive compared with similar offerings.

The bottom line: Toshiba's holiday update of one of our favorite laptops, the Satellite E205, adds graphics and WiMax, but its higher price and lack of other new features prevent it from being a standout at the end of 2010.

Apple MacBook Air Fall 2010 Review

The good: Amazingly slim design; great keyboard/trackpad combo; new iLife '11 software included; decent graphics performance; 16:9 display.

The bad: Pricey for an 11-inch laptop with an older processor; lacks backlit keyboard and SD card slot.

The bottom line: Apple makes the MacBook Air both smaller and less expensive, creating an excellent ultraportable, but leaving out a few features along the way.

Acer Aspire TimelineX AS1830T-68U118 Review

The good: Excellent specs for its size; good battery life; compact, lightweight.

The bad: No dedicated graphics; plastic body looks and feels cheap; keyboard and touch pad are substandard.

The bottom line: Acer's high-end and extremely portable 11.6-inch TimelineX 1830T-68U118 offers a great combination of processor power and features that match what you'd find on a full-size laptop.

Asus U35JC-A1 Review

The good: Great size, thin chassis, fast performance; Nvidia Optimus graphics; good battery life.

The bad: Lacks an optical drive; graphics performance is OK but not great; poor viewing angles.

The bottom line: The Asus U35Jc-A1 is a thin, but solid, 13-inch laptop with no processor compromises and Nvidia Optimus graphics, covering all the basics--except an optical drive.

Lenovo IdeaPad Y560d Review

The good: Includes 3D hardware; powerful CPU/GPU combo; excellent keyboard and touch pad.

The bad: Polarized eyeglass 3D system isn't very impressive.

The bottom line: One of only a handful of 3D laptops, the Lenovo IdeaPad Y560d skips active shutter glasses for an inferior technology, but keeps the A-list price.

News : New HP chief sees software as 'the glue'

Leo Apotheker
HP's new chief, Léo Apotheker.
Who exactly is Léo Apotheker?
For many American investors and analysts, the new president and CEO of Hewlett-Packard is a relative unknown. HP held a conference call this morning to formally introduce its new chief executive and take questions about what many are calling a curious choice.

The call was brief and didn't get into many specifics other than that software will play a much larger role in HP's future.
"For me the decision to accept [the position] was an easy one. I don't think there's another company in tech that can match HP's opportunity in the marketplace," Apotheker said in his opening remarks. "I have a great appreciation for this company's technology and its people."

Asus UL80JT Review

The good: Nvidia Optimus switchable graphics; slim design.

The bad: Weak battery life; low-voltage Core i3 processor is slower than other Core i3 laptops; too much keyboard flex.

The bottom line: A thin design and Nvidia Optimus automatic-switching graphics make the Asus UL80JT-A1 an initially appealing laptop, but looks can be misleading: the underwhelming CPU and battery life are both serious negatives.

Gateway ID49C08u Review

The good: Slim design; automatic GPU switching; Core i5 processor; good graphics performance.

The bad: Short battery life; flimsy keyboard; poorly designed touch pad.

The bottom line: The Gateway ID49C08 combines speedy Core i5 performance and automatic-switching Nvidia graphics in a small package at a reasonable price, but several small annoyances take away from the experience.

HP Envy 17 Review

The good: Slim, attractive design; full-HD 1080p display; USB 3.0 port.

The bad: Only one GPU option; clickpad still isn't perfect; short battery life.

The bottom line: Though it's still in the upper ranges of current laptop prices, HP's upscale-feeling Envy 17 offers great hardware at a decent price.

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 14 Review

The good: Great keyboard, bright screen, solid performance.

The bad: Thick and heavy, annoying rubberized trackpoint.

The bottom line: The budget-minded Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 14 does its job as a solid small-business laptop, and Lenovo finally throws in a DVD drive, but it's too chunky compared with svelte competitors.

Acer Aspire Timeline 3810TZ-4880 Review

Acer's new Timeline series of laptops, including the 13-inch Aspire 3810T, aims to combine the thin, sexy designs of more expensive laptops with cost-saving, low-power processors. But that's a direction many PC makers are moving in, thanks to budget-friendly CPUs such as the AMD Neo and Intel CULV family, so Acer needed a bigger hook, such as the Timeline's claims of all-day, 8-hour computing.

Toshiba Satellite L455-S5975 Review

We've said it before, and we'll say it again: especially in this economy, it's hard to hate a laptop that only costs $330. It's even harder to hate a Windows 7 laptop that costs that much. The Toshiba L455-S5975 is, by at least 50 dollars, the least expensive notebook computer in2009. Less expensive than many Netbooks, the L455 sounds too good to be true for a computer with a 15.6-inch screen and Microsoft's newest OS. And, to some extent, it is. Starting with a shape that comes from a time machine dialed to 10 years ago to an underpowered Celeron processor inside--the very same Celeron that we've already seen before in the last retail roundup--the L455 won't ever be confused for anything other than a bargain.

Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q850 Review

With the new Qosmio X505-Q850, Toshiba has refocused the brand on gaming power, packing in a new mobile Intel Core i7 CPU and Nvidia's GeForce GTS 250M graphics card (not the very top of the line, but close). While toning down, at least slightly, the over-the-top red flame designs of old.
With a massive 18-inch 1080p display, it's no surprise our review unit included a Blu-ray drive (a bandwagon Toshiba has been reluctant to join, as it was the driving force behind HD - DVD ). Those features, (plus a second solid-state hard drive) makes for a system that costs $1,899--not much compared with the tricked-out Alienware laptops of old, but considered very high-end in today's Netbook-obsessed laptop market.

HP Pavilion dv6-3055dx Review

HP Pavilion dv6-3055dx

The HP Pavilion dv6-3055dx is one of those laptops that looks like it should be exceptional, but turns out to be fairly average. A 15.6-inch thin-and-light, the 3055dx has an attractive design, a large keyboard, built-in Webcam, and multitouch touch pad, and is powered by a top-end AMD quad-core processor and 6GB of memory. Plus, it has a whopping 640GB hard drive.

HP Pavilion dv5-2035dx Review

HP Pavilion dv5-2035dx

Among the budget group of laptops in our current roundup of retail back-to-school laptops, the HP Pavilion dv5-2035dx is a little pricier, a little smaller, and a little slower than most. The budget models we've reviewed in this roundup have come in between $499 and $599 and have featured a 15.6-inch display. The Pavilion dv5-2035dx costs $629 and features a 14.5-inch display. It also uses an AMD Turion II processor, which is a beat or two slower than competing Intel-based laptops.

HP Pavilion dv4-2145dx Review

HP Pavilion dv4-2145dx

We tend to view 14-inch laptops as sitting in the sweet spot between portability and productivity. Whereas ultraportables are better for constant travelers and larger 15- and 16-inch laptops are better for general home use, we find that 14-inch models are a good size for your do-it-all, workhorse laptop: compact and light enough for daily commutes yet with a large enough display for multitasking and with a comfortable keyboard. The HP Pavilion dv4-2145dx features a 14.1-inch screen, but we don't recommend it as a jack-of-all-trades laptop. Given its relative heft and bulk and tiny remote control, the Pavilion dv4-2145dx is best as a small but mighty entertainment laptop. Plus, its battery life is middling at best.

Acer Aspire One Review

Acer Aspire One Review

The Aspire One line of Netbooks has long been a bright spot in Acer's laptop lineup, thanks to the company's firm commitment to rock-bottom prices and decent, if unexciting, design and construction. The latest version, called the Acer Aspire One D260-23797 (one of several fixed configurations of the D260, each with slightly different components), scores points for being small, thin, and light, even for a 10-inch Netbook, despite having a decent-size keyboard and touch pad.

Acer Aspire TimelineX AS3820T-5246 Review

Acer Aspire TimelineX AS3820T-5246

Acer's Timeline series of laptops was one of the first to emphasize long battery life in a slim, but full-powered system. Since the first Timeline laptops hit in the first half of 2009, many other PC makers have been able to match thin designs with long battery life and decent performance, making the Timeline at least somewhat less distinctive.

Sony VAIO FW Review

 Sony VAIO FW Review

Welcome to our full review on the Sony VAIO FW-270j. This multimedia powerhouse sports a glossy and HD-ready 16.4” display, complete with 16:9 aspect ratio. It easily handles HD input/output via the standard Blu-ray player and HDMI port. It also features an Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 2.26GHz to go along with an ample 4GB RAM and 320GB HDD. Though a little heavy and short on battery life, the FW-270j is reasonably priced for its capabilities and will meet most your multimedia needs with style.

Reduce Overheating of Your Laptop

Cleaning the Laptop Fan and Vents to Reduce Overheating

If clogged air circulation vents can cause your laptop to overheat, it stands to reason that cleaning the laptop vents can cure the problem. While laptop overheating can be reduced by cleaning your fans and exhaust vents, cleaning your laptop air vents sometimes can be more complicated than it sounds.
A partial cure can be achieved by blowing compressed air through your laptop’s venting system. To do this, buy a can of compressed air at a computer or photography store, and blast the air into the exhaust vent. This will cause dust to blow out through the fans and air intake ports. You also can use a hand vacuum cleaner to attempt to suck the dust out.

The 2nd Best Gaming Laptop

Gamers will love this one.

Alienware Area-51 m9750

Today we bring you a review of our second Alienware gaming laptop, the Area-51 m9750. It should be fun seeing how Alienware managed to improve on the m9700 I tested back in June. You know it's going to be badass, so let's see if it's 'Darth Vader badass', or more like 'Anakin Skywalker in Episode III badass'.
Featuring an Intel Core 2 Duo T7600 processor with 1GB total graphics memory between the two NVIDIA GeForce Go 7950GTX GPUs and 2GB of RAM, you better believe this laptop will spank pretty much any other mobile system you put it up against. Let's see what's what!

The Best Gaming Laptop

Alienware m15x

Say hello to the new Area-51 m15x from Alienware. Tagged for mixing their legendary performance with impressive mobility, it is a 15.4 gaming laptop that when configured properly can knock close to $5,000. When we first got wind of this machine, we were worried that Dell's conservative take to design would dilute the futuristic flash and style that Alienware has been known to supply. In true LaptopLogic form read on to find out if looks and performance match our intuition.

Acer Ferrari 1100 Review

Acer Ferrari 1100

When we looked at Acer's first Ferrari-themed ultra portable, the Ferrari 1000, we liked its car-themed style and strong performance, but were disappointed by its mediocre battery life. We opened the box of its successor, the Ferrari 1100, with some anticipation--this is, after all, a well-designed, full-featured ultra portable laptop that ought to impress. But alas: Despite its strong components, the Ferrari 1100 posted mixed performance scores and less-than-stellar battery life. Though we're thrilled that Acer has managed to squeeze a DVD burner into the Ferrari's compact and solidly constructed case, we're not convinced that anyone but the most fanatical sports-car enthusiasts will be thrilled to spend $1,800 on the Ferrari 1100.

Cleaning your laptop

Keep your Laptop clean

beforee attempting to clean your laptop, read the User's Manual to learn what the recommended procedure for cleaning your particular laptop is. Most laptop manufacturers recommend thoroughly cleaning a laptop once a year but frequent travelers may wish to clean their laptop more often. When cleaning a laptop computer do not use any harsh cleaning agents or those which contain ammonia in them on any part of the laptop.

Dirt that can build up inside and on your laptop computer includes pet hair and dander, dust, cigarette ashes and residue. This dirt can damage your display, affect the performance of the fans and block or cause problems with I/O ports.

Toshiba Portege R705-P25 Review

Toshiba Portege R705-P25

We know that the quest for the perfect laptop is ultimately fruitless. Different users have different needs, budgets, and expectations, and tomorrow's technology threatens to make any just-purchased laptop semi-obsolete before it even comes out of its cardboard box. That said, the new Toshiba Portege R705 comes about as close as anything we've seen this year, offering a great mix of price, design, features, and performance.

HP Envy 13 Review

HP Envy 13

narky bloggers (ahem) could easily dismiss the HP Envy 13 as a MacBook Pro plus $300, say so in a tweet, and call it a day. Hell, I was certainly tempted. (The Envy 13 starts at $1699. As configured, our review unit would cost you $1799.) This handsome laptop isn't so much a tribute as it is a poke in Apple's eye saying, "We can design similarly sleek, sexy machines...and maybe charge people a little more." But the HP story here--and my review--has a bit more to it than that.

Acer Aspire 8920 Review

Acer Aspire 8920

 Desktop Replacement Laptop

The $2599 Acer Aspire 8920 is a whole lotta laptop, crammed with so many features that we kept checking for a kitchen sink. It has a humongous screen, a Blu-ray drive, six speakers, a giant hard drive, a top-flight processor, and a gadget-laden keyboard. You won't skip the light fandango while carrying this 9-pound monstrosity, but you will get awesome performance (and anemic battery life). In other words, it's a powerful desktop replacement laptop that will take up most of your desktop.

HP EliteBook 8440W Review

HP EliteBook 8440W

Rugged, Powerful Business Laptop Lacks Multimedia Polish

The HP EliteBook 8440w won't win awards for ultrathin design elements or elegant looks, but underneath the almost military-style exterior is a dual-core (with Hyperthreading) Intel CPU coupled with an nVidia Quadro FX 380M professional-grade graphics processor. When you first unpack the laptop, the muted magnesium-clad system impresses with its solid feel. While the body of the unit is mostly plastic, it's a dense, unyielding plastic that exudes ruggedness without seeming overbuilt. Priced at $1649 (as of February 23, 2010), the 8440w isn't the least expensive all-purpose laptop, but it delivers robust performance in a 5.3-pound package.

Dell Vostro 3300 Review

Dell Vostro 3300

A Sleek and Compact Small-Business Laptop

Dell's Vostro 3300 inherits its svelte design and thin esthetic from the original Dell Adamo design, though the 3300 isn't quite as skinny or light as the Adamo. Even so, Dell's new small-business laptop offers combination of hardware and support options well tuned to its target market. With Dell's current discounts, the Vostro 3300 starts at $599 . The price of the configuration we tested is $913.

Dell Inspiron 14 Review

Dell Inspiron 14

The Dell Inspiron 14 laptop computer is one of Dell’s many fine entries in this category. It represents an exceptional balance of the most needed laptop features with reasonable cost. Our review is based on what we believe to be an optimal configuration for a wide array of consumers but just about everything on this computer can be customized to the individual user’s needs and desires. Some of those choices add to the cost while others will actually reduce the final unit cost. We appreciate the Build It Your Way feature of Dell’s web site precisely because it makes customization simple and lets the consumer know exactly what effect any given choice has on the purchase price.e

HP Compaq 6730b Review

HP Compaq 6730b

Convenience and versatility are among the best reasons to look for a laptop computer. Today’s best units can essentially replace the standard desktop computer for most needs yet are truly portable. The HP Compaq 6730b is among the best small laptops available and while it can certainly be used by students and home users, it has a decided bent towards business use

Sony VAIO SR Series Review

Sony VAIO SR Series

Sony is known for its top quality across the spectrum of consumer electronics and the Sony VAIO SR series of laptop computers carries on the tradition. A first glance at the elegant and lightweight magnesium alloy housing tells you that you’re looking at an exceptional product. The understated elegance continues to the ultra slim profile which measures just 1.33 inches thick at its deepest point when closed and the color choices of Night Black, Titanium Gray,or Alpine White. It’s true that Sony products tend to be somewhat pricey compared to their nearest competition but the cost buys a lot in terms of reliability and performance.

Dell Inspiron 15 Review

Dell Inspiron 15

The overall design, processor, and entertainment features add up to create a computing device that helps accomplish your to-do list. The Dell Inspiron 15 is designed with an attractive display and multimedia features.

Apple Macbook Review

MacBook Pro A1286

From the outside, the latest 15-inch MacBook Pro closely resembles its predecessor. It sports the same solid aluminum unibody enclosure with the indented thumb scoop for opening the lid, the same huge touchpad, and the same stiff button that makes tapping and swiping the touchpad with your fingers easier than depressing the button. The big glossy screen still has a resolution of 1440 by 900 pixels, and all ports--including the MagSafe power port, gigabit ethernet, FireWire 800, two USB ports, and separate audio-in and -out ports--are still grouped together on the left side of the case. The iSight camera is positioned in the same spot, as is the 8X SuperDrive. Nevertheless, Apple has introduced significant changes to the new model

HP ProBook 5310m Review

HP ProBook 5310m

Ultraportable Laptop

HP has a thing of business-savvy beauty on its hands with the ProBook 5310m. Why do I say that? Even the guys in the PC World Labs--who see everything under the sun--were impressed by its industrial design. The sleek black aluminum case, the supple texture on the undercarriage...the list goes on. Me? I was impressed with the $699 starting price (the review unit in our office sells for $899). When they weren't ogling this slick, 13.3-inch, 3.8-pound, 0.9-inch-thin ultraportable, I grabbed the machine for my own testing

Dell Inspiron 17 Review

Dell Inspiron 17

The Dell Inspiron 17 is a laptop computer that takes the user on a journey through the 17.3-inch display screen, fast processor and a vast selection of features. Lenovo IdeaPad U350 Review

Lenovo IdeaPad U350

The stylish Lenovo IdeaPad U350 occupies the space between tiny, relatively low powered netbooks and more powerful but also bulkier laptops. While that compromise position continues to some extent, there have recently been some very important improvements to it in terms of computing power that make it a far more attractive package.
