Cleaning the Laptop Fan and Vents to Reduce Overheating

If clogged air circulation vents can cause your laptop to overheat, it stands to reason that cleaning the laptop vents can cure the problem. While laptop overheating can be reduced by cleaning your fans and exhaust vents, cleaning your laptop air vents sometimes can be more complicated than it sounds.
A partial cure can be achieved by blowing compressed air through your laptop’s venting system. To do this, buy a can of compressed air at a computer or photography store, and blast the air into the exhaust vent. This will cause dust to blow out through the fans and air intake ports. You also can use a hand vacuum cleaner to attempt to suck the dust out.

This does not always cure the problem, because if the dust has been in the system for a while, it can become caked onto the exhaust vents and the fans and not yield to an air blast. In this case, your laptop may continue to overheat.
In this situation, you can disassemble the laptop to clean the air pathways and the fans. If you do so, you will almost certainly void any warranty remaining on your laptop due to opening the system. Even if your system is out of warranty, this process requires extreme care. Whenever you disassemble a notebook computer, you risk damaging components by discharging static electricity onto sensitive components, disconnecting cables or connectors, and otherwise making a mess of the sensitive internal workings of your computer.
